Special Enrollment Period & Qualifying Life Events

Get Covered After a Life Change-Even Outside Open Enrollment

If you've recently experienced a major life change-like losing your health insurance, getting married, or moving-you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). This allows you to enroll in an ACA-compliant health insurance plan outside of the usual Open Enrollment window.

At The HgO Group, we help individuals and families navigate ACA special enrollment, determine eligibility, and complete applications quickly-so you don't go uninsured.

What Is a Special Enrollment Period (SEP)?

When Life Changes, So Can Your Coverage

Normally, you can only apply for ACA health insurance during Open Enrollment (typically November 1 through January 15). But if you experience a qualifying life event, you get a 60-day Special Enrollment Period to sign up for or change your Marketplace plan.

This 60-day window typically starts from the date of your event-though in some cases (like losing employer coverage), you may apply up to 60 days in advance.

If you're wondering, "When can I sign up for health insurance after losing my job?" or "Can I apply after moving?"-you're in the right place.

Common Qualifying Life Events

What Triggers Special Enrollment?

You may be eligible for SEP if you've experienced one of the following:

Some states also allow year-round enrollment for low-income individuals. We'll help determine if you qualify.

Documentation & Enrollment Process

Proof May Be Required-We'll Help You Submit It

When applying for health insurance through SEP, you'll usually need to submit documentation proving your qualifying event. Examples include:

  • A termination letter or COBRA notice
  • Marriage or birth certificate
  • Lease or utility bill for a move
  • Proof of Medicaid denial

Our licensed agents will guide you through what's needed and how to upload it-avoiding delays or denials.

Missed Open Enrollment & No Qualifying Event?

Here's What You Can Do

Unfortunately, you can't sign up for an ACA plan without a qualifying life event. If you missed Open Enrollment and don't qualify for SEP, you still have options.

Explore Short-Term Health Insurance as a temporary solution. These plans aren't ACA-compliant, but they can provide basic coverage while you wait for the next enrollment period.
