Understanding the Basics

What Medicare Really Covers

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people age 65 and older, as well as certain individuals with disabilities. It provides essential coverage-but it doesn't cover everything. That's where your choices come in.

There are two primary paths:

Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing care, hospice services, and some home health care

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)

Helps pay for outpatient care, doctor visits, preventive services, and durable medical equipment

Depending on your needs, you may also add:

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

All-in-one plans offered by private insurers that bundle hospital, medical, and often prescription coverage

Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Plans)

Standalone drug coverage offered by private insurers to help pay for prescription medications

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Optional policies that help cover out-of-pocket costs not paid by Original Medicare, like deductibles and coinsurance

The right setup depends on your health, lifestyle, and budget-and that's exactly what we help you figure out.

What Each Part Covers

We know the terminology can be confusing. Here's a quick breakdown of the core components of Medicare, with links to explore each one further:

Part A - Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility stays, hospice care, and some home health services.

Part B - Medical Insurance

Covers outpatient care, doctor visits, durable medical equipment, preventive services, and more.

Part C - Medicare Advantage

Combines Parts A and B into a single plan, often including extra benefits like dental, vision, and prescription coverage. Offered by private insurers.

Part D - Prescription Drug Plans

Standalone plans that help cover the cost of medications. Often included in Medicare Advantage, but also available separately.

Not sure where to begin? You're not alone. That's exactly why we're here.

What About Gaps in Medicare? Consider a Supplement Plan

Original Medicare doesn't cover everything-and there's no annual cap on out-of-pocket costs. That's where Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) can help.

These optional plans help cover deductibles, coinsurance, and copays not paid by Medicare. You can pair a Medigap plan with Original Medicare and a Part D plan for comprehensive coverage without surprise bills.

When to Enroll (And Why It Matters)

Timing can affect your coverage options-and your costs. Here's what to know:

Initial Enrollment Period

Begins three months before you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and extends three months after. This is when most people sign up for Medicare for the first time.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

Runs from October 15 to December 7 each year. This is your opportunity to switch Medicare Advantage or Part D plans.

Special Enrollment Periods (SEP)

Life changes-like retirement, losing employer coverage, or moving-may allow you to enroll or switch plans outside the normal windows.

Missing the right enrollment period can lead to coverage delays or permanent penalties. Let's talk before that happens.
